In the far south of the city of Cienfuegos is the residential area of "La Punta", since the last century known as Punta Gorda, with a single access road, determined by the physical form of the territory, it is characterized and known for the formal types of buildings (with extensive influence of wooden architecture in the Caribbean and North American) their locations within the plots and their natural and built environment.
It has been always a holiday and recreation place, most of the built houses were rented to spend the summer season, so the variety of owners, although some owners live there. Most of these buildings were given to private docks at the back of the house or into the street 35 (Gazel), these houses have railings and wooden huts worked beautifully.
Other recreational activities were conducted in the area. In a barren site, adjacent to Villa Elena was built the first tennis court. The families were moving boat engines or small yachts, in the afternoon, visiting the marshes, the creeks, the Caletón ¨ Don Bruno¨ and the river mouths. It was built a large dock, called ¨ real¨, in front of the Boca, a of the current 0 and 35 street and began to rob the vapors of passage, including a wheel river, called Damují. All sea bathrooms were fully enclosed, with booths or sheds to take fresh.
Also in the area has been the source Guanaroca and the sculpture of the same name, made by the prominent artist Rita Longa, which qualifies completely the site urban historic, center of reunion of the Cienfuegos population.
Punta Gorda was declared a National Monument on January 20th 2000.

French émigrés from Bordeaux and Louisiana founded the settlement of Fernandina de Jagua on a large, calm bay on the Caribbean Sea on April 22, 1819. In 1830, when it was upgraded to a town, its name was changed to Cienfuegos, in honor of José Cienfuegos, the Governor-General of Cuba. Fifty years later, it was proclaimed a city and, for its beauty, was called "the pearl of the south." By the end of the 19th century, it had become the fourth most important city in the country.,
Considered the crowning jewel of Cuban architectural in the 19th century, Cienfuegos stands out for the perfect design of its streets and for the refinement and good taste of the buildings in the historic center of the city, which has been declared a national monument. When visiting, stop by the Casa del Fundador (the Founder's House); Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) Cathedral; the Tomás Terry Theater; the Ferrer Palace; and the José Martí Park, which contains the only arch of triumph in Cuba.,
Other attractions include the Prado Promenade, the Valle Palace, the museums of Naval and Provincial History, and the Reina (Queen's) Cemetery.,
Farther out from the center of the city, tour the Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua (Jagua for short) Fortress, the Tomás Acea Cemetery and the Botanical Gardens.,
In addition to these cultural and historic attractions, Cienfuegos has excellent facilities for scuba diving and other water sports, nature tourism and thermal baths.

Punta Gorda Cienfuegos
The Punta Gorda area is south of town, just beyond the Malecon sea wall, and serves as a top spot for the moneyed. The views from the bay along the waterfront, especially from Calle 35 and Calle 37, are sublime. Many choice properties front the bay, including hotels and restaurants, and the market is also fun. The Hostal Palacio Azul is amongst the most grand attractions in this part of the city, while the gleaming white Club Cienfuegos is equally impressive and formerly functioned as a rather exclusive yacht club.
