Covering parts of Villa Clara, Cienfuegos and Sancti Spíritus Provinces, the Escambray Mountains are the most important mountain range in central Cuba. The area contains a variety of geographical features, including several important cave systems; Lake Hanabanilla, the only mountain lake in Cuba; waterfalls; tall mountains; and Topes de Collantes Nature Park, 2625 feet (800 meters) above sea level, which is surrounded by mountains and the microclimate is always cool. Many
species of plants and animals (none of which are poisonous) make this area particularly beautiful and create a special ambiance that is propitious to rest and relaxation.

The Parroquial Mayor (Main Parish) Church is the pride of the townspeople, for it is proof of the antiquity of the settlement-which became a city through royal decree in 1867.
